For you, David – NationNews Barbados — nationnews.com

SCORES OF BARBADIANS assembled in Independence Square on Monday evening to celebrate the life of the late Prime Minister, the Right Honourable David John Howard Thompson, through a cultural concert.
The concert, titled Don’t Panic and organized by George Pilgrim and Norman Barrow, included performances from over 15 local entertainers, who rendered some of Thompson’s favourite songs. Among those who assembled to participate in the celebration were Thompson’s widow Mara and their three daughters, Oya, Misha and Osa-Marie.
Ronnie Morris and Toni Norville united to deliver a beautiful rendition of I Look To You, which they dedica武汉光伏发电ted to the late Prime Minister’s widow. That memorable performance was followed by calypsonian Adrian Clarke and his a cappella version of Morgan Heritage’s Down By The River. Dwayne Husbands was there to deliver his No. 1 Fan, while Kareen Clarke sang Just Want To Be Your Friend and You Raise Me Up.
During those performances some members of the audience remained sitting in the blue and yellow chairs provided for them. But from the time the band krosfyah started heating up the stage for singers Khiomal Nurse and Edwin Yearwood to come on, those sitting joined the standing party.
The band delivered a number of their popular songs. In an emotional rendition, Yearwood gave the first live performance of the self-penned Until We Meet Again, which he dedicated to Thompson.
Member of Parliament for The City, Patrick Todd, who was among those present, pleaded with Barbadians to put aside political differences and unite as one Barbadian people on such occasions.
“This was a very profound expression of love and appreciation for the life and times of our beloved late Prime Minister, the Honourable David Thompson, especially at this time . . . when we are celebrating Independence.
“It was tremendous that the various artistes were able to show their appreciation for David’s contribution to national development  in such a tangible way, freely giving of their talent. These artists showed the widow and children of the late Prime Minister that we as a Barbadian people will keep his memories dearly in our hearts,” said Todd. (AH)

Renowned organist Scott Dettra’s recital at St Peter’s Parish Church was quite a treat for the hundreds who turned out to hear him as well as for the opening of the St Peter Flower Festival.
This year, the United States Embassy partnered with the church, bringing in Dettra as special guest.
United States Embassy Consul General Eugene Sweeney, introducing Dettra, told his audience that  the sought-after organist made over 350 appearances a year.
Sweeney said the prize-winning organist, also the associate director of music of the Washin武汉光伏发电gton National Cathedral, had prepared ensembles for performances with the National Symphony Orchestra and the Julliard Orchestra.

Farewell to Tassa – NationNews Barbados — nationnews.com

Social Share

THEY?sang for Tassa. They wept for Tassa.
And they all agreed that one of Barbados’ top songbirds had gone too soon.
A who’s who of the entertainment fraternity headlined a standing room-only congregation at James Street Methodist Church, The City, at the 1:30 p.m. farewell service yesterday for the singer and All Stars Calypso Tent performer.
Two-time national calypso monarch Adrian Clarke called Carolyn Tassa Forde, who passed away on February 9 at the age of 41, an angel; and one of this country’s top female singers, Terencia TC Coward, hailed Tassa as a special person.
“You’re an angel and Heaven has just reclaimed an angel,” Clarke said.
“I?will always remember your smile and words of encouragement. I am now alone in carrying the fight out there for female singers, but you have given me the strength to carry on,” said a tearful TC.
Clarke, Sir Ruel, Smokey Burke, Troy Special, Paula Hinds and Colin Spencer sang on her behalf; Red Plastic Bag and Sir Don led the pallbearers out of the church; and the Mighty Gabby, Grynner, Richard Stoute, Kid Site, Serenader, Pompey, Invader, Lord Radio, Mark Lord, Mike Sealy, Trevor Eastmond et al. mourned with relatives and the rest of the congregation.
There too were Cabinet ministers Stephen Lashley and Steve Blackett and dozens of former students from Queen’s College, Tassa’s alma mater. Top of the roll was the class of 1980, the last all-girls’ form, of which Tassa was a part.
Minister of Labour Dr Esther Byer-Suckoo wore her Queen’s College tie, while new National Cultural Foundation chairman Monique Taitt, also a f武汉光伏发电ormer Queen’s College student, gave praise in the church balcony.
No one cried more than Chad, Tassa’s son and only child, who was described as the love of her life, and no tribute was more emotionally charged than the eulogy of bosom pal and long-time friend Jo-Ann Jordan.
A crestfallen Jordan said Tassa was a phenomenal friend.
“She was a prankster, joker, negotiator, defender, sister, and a shoulder to cry on.”
Jordan said Tassa was always the voice of reason, adding that the two had grown up together, studied together, performed together and laughed together.
“She loved life, loved to dance and sing; but the biggest love of her life was Chad. He was her pride and joy,” she said.
Jordan said that Tassa and her son had an unbelievable bond and were inseparable.

BTA reaches out to Rihanna – NationNews Barbados — nationnews.com

Social Share

THE BARBADOS TOURISM AUTHORITY (BTA) has started discussions with singing superstar Rihanna in a bid to get her to assist with the marketing of the holiday destination internationally.
Making the disclosure yesterday, BTA chairman Adrian Elcock said the Grammy award-winning Barbadian singer-songwriter “has tremendous brand value for Barbados”.
He stated his intention to “exploit” that feature as part of the BTA’s international marketing efforts. Elcock said he wanted to work with Rihanna because “she is one of us”.
tHe told a media briefing at Dover Beach Hotel in Christ Church that BTA president David Rice, “despatched” to Los Angeles two weeks ago, had met with Rihanna’s management team. As a result of that meeting,  Elcock said: “We are close, guys. We are going to bring it home and we are going to have Rihanna selling Barbados. She wants to participate.”
But he said care had to be taken that the relationship between the BTA and Rihanna was “respectful”.
“We just want to make sure that we do it the right way,” he commented. “We don’t want a relationship that is not respectful to her or not respectful to Barbados and we are going to continue to invest in building that relationship.”
He observed: “She is committed but she is a businesswoman and she has to put the business forward. It is not just about charity.”
In her relatively short singing career, Rihanna has picked up at least four Grammy Awards. She has close to 100 major awards, including American Music Awards, Billboard awards and BET awards. Her awards are in pop, rhythm and blues, soul, rock and rap categories.
Elc武汉光伏发电ock spoke of the board’s intention to have a “signed” relationship with Barbadian world champion hurdler Ryan Brathwaite.
“Ryan needs help in terms of the mental support that he needs to perform at the highest level,” Elcock said.
He urged Barbadians to continue to give the young athlete their support. In turn, he indicated the BTA’s intention to put “whatever financial resources it can” behind the Barbadian.
Elcock is determined that high-profile Barbadians who shine on the international stage should play a role in Barbados’ international tourism marketing effort. (GC)

Downlow dilemma – NationNews Barbados — nationnews.com

Social Share

Ping! Downlow? – Hell No!! I was in the salon the other day, only to overhear a conversation about a girl who went home and caught her man in bed with another man. What is amazing, is that just three weeks before she had been told by her friends that they had seen him in the club, with a group of fellows who “looked gay”. She confronted him about it, and he obviously denied being gay. Turned how he was on the downlow!! Would you have a man that was on the downlow and what would you do if you found yourself in that position.
Gissy B I don t have a problem with anyone and their sexuality and neither do I have a problem with a woman who has a relationship with a bisexual man once she knows he is bisexual .. whatever rocks their boats. I have a problem though with men and women on the down-low because that is how diseases are spread! Declare your hand and it is all good with me since I am not here to judge. What upsets me most is men that are always ready to kill a b*** and will insult and instigate violence to known homosexuals when they are homosexual or bisexual themselves. It takes a stronger person to admit their sexuality than to pull a trigger of a gun.
Wa Gine On Hey – I agree!! I’m not here to judge either, but men who don’t declare their hand are absolutely filthy and as you said, that’s how diseases are spread!!
Avril In two words: HECK NO! My man, make up your mind. Who are you gonna be? You can t be my man this morning and Bubba s fill-in-the-blank tonight. It s one thing fighting a girl over man but I refuse to fight a gay guy for a man cause we all know they don t cool out. If I were her he wouldn t even know I caught him, he would just miss me forever.
Wa Gine On Hey – I want no part of a bi-sexual man either! As long as I know, I am gone. Straa88888.
Hottie Burke Keep a man like that?? That is out of the question! I find it utterly disgusting when a man is on the down-low. Realistically speaking he in most cases is using the woman as a decoy to the lifestyle he truly wants to live and that is wrong on all levels. I try to be rather objective when it comes to the issue of being gay if that is your lifestyle so be it, but don t infringe it on me! They are also signs that causes alarms to set off about a man who is gay there are certain characteristics that just don t hide and the fact that she was pre-warned and took his denial as gospel girlfriend needed a reality check! I understand that for some men to proclaim their gay-ness is not a walk in the park.. but for God s sake stay single! Keep away from women and stop using us as a screen to your life.
Wa Gine On Hey –True dat Hottie Burke. Using women as a cover when you know you prefer your own sex is simply devious. Stay Single!
Brownin Fa Life Why couldn t he be honest with her from the get go? If he wanted to be with men or even be bi-sexual, he should have given her the choice to be in a relationship with him or not. He decided for her by lying to her and not being upfront. I would hope she was using protection. My first steps would be to knock him out, go to t武汉光伏发电he doctor to get tested and then I would put him on blast to warn other women. He is a low down dirty bastard who should be called out. He either doesn t care about her or the relationship or he was in denial regarding his sexuality. Either way he should have been honest.
Wa Gine On Hey – Down-low men are simply disgusting. For me getting tested should be a first priority as well and he better pray to God that all is well.
Dancing Queen – I think it s a low down dirty shame that men have to do that crap. I would NEVER keep a man like that, NEVER. He s subjecting my system to all kinds of nastiness just because he wants the best of both worlds. Those men need to get their act together and choose one or the other, better yet go along with the man and leave the woman to find a good, decent, straight man who is 100 per cent into her. That shady behaviour needs to stop.
Wa Gine On Hey – The reason they do it is because 99 per cent of the women would never want a man who is bi-sexual, and they are afraid to let society know they would get involved with a man.
Aliboo Keep him? Girl when I done chop him up there won’t be anything to keep. That is just nasty, even thinking about it crawling my skin. People like him can t be trusted or even given a second a chance. That is why there is so much AIDS and other STDs out there because of people like him who want to go both ways.
Wa Gine On Hey – I wouldn’t be able to chop him, I would go into a panic attack hoping and praying that I had not contracted any disease from him!! I support condoms all the way babes.
Anna-Lee I think its nasty, cruel, dishonest and the list goes on. The girl could be having unprotected sexual intercourse with this man. Then she ends up with a whole set of STD s including the big A. He most likely would bring down Jesus making her believe it was her that cheated and not him. If he know he wants to be gay then just go and be in a relationship with only men and leave women alone! He could be on the down-low with just men, he doesn t need to mess up people s lives to do that. Who on earth would want a man like that?

No, I’m not cheating!! – NationNews Barbados — nationnews.com

Social Share

Why is it that men can never admit they are cheating? Your boyfriend’s whole programme has changed; the time he spends with you is being cut. He’s either working later or spending more time with the boys. Yet the strange phone calls haven’t gone unnoticed, and neither has the strange perfume on his clothes. But no matter how you question him, the answer is: “No, I’m not cheating.”
Burkett – Who wants to admit that they are cheating? Whether it’s a man or woman, the human instinct is to defend our negative actions, to hide when we are doing wrong. Who likes that feeling of guilt, especially when we hurt someone we profess to love? Some men, believe it or not, actually think of the consequences if their cheating ways are revealed: Will his woman leave him? What would other people think of him? And, of course, it goes back to the ego issue. Which man wants to do the wimp thing and tell his woman he has stepped out?
Wha Gine On Hey – I agree that no one likes to admit that they are cheating, but only a few men may think of the consequences. The majority of them only study the lies they will tell IF they get caught.
Sugar Baby – Some men don’t want to admit they are cheating because they know they have a good woman at home and don’t want to lose her. Yet they do all types of crap and can never admit it.
Wha Gine On Hey – I hate to say it, but men do seem to have insatiable appetites.
Marshall – I often wonder the same thing. Most men will go to the grave denying that they had an affair; even if visually seen by their partner, they will make it seem as though it’s nothing.
Wha Gine On Hey – It’s in their blood, babes. Why admit when you can turn around the tables and make it look otherwise?
Goblin Queen – Most men are habitual liars. They just can’t help it, even with facts being thrown in their faces. A friend of mine stated that he doesn’t want to hurt his girlfriend, so he lies to protect her feelings. My thing is, if it’s her feelings he cares about, why cheat? Everything that’s done in the dark always comes to light, so why risk? Do they have shame, especially when there is no way out of the lie? Remember the song Shaggy sang some years ago, It Wasn’t Me? I guess that’s their anthem.
We as women have to be on top of our game so that when the guys come with their stories, we would always be a step ahead. Remember a wise man can always play a fool’s part, but a fool could never ever play a wise man’s part.
Wha Gine On Hey – Spoken like a lady who is truly on top of the game. Women need to stay ahead.
Sunset Layne – I believe that it’s a built-in mechanism in men; it happens very naturally. It’s what makes them up. If he doesn’t do it, then he’s not a man, and men must maintain their ego. They are bent on cheating and they always will be.
Cee Cee – Men never cheat. They spread love and money amongst needy females. I somehow think men feel it is their civic duty to “share the wealth” but we condone it by not following our basic instincts. If it walks like a duck, and it quacks like a duck – you know the saying. It is what it is!! So accept it and live with it or move on, because he’s not going to change. To him, he’s doing nothing wrong.
Wha Gine On Hey – All might not be sharing “wealth”. Some might be sharing “pittance”, but they do seem bent on having more than one partner.
Jewel – As a male friend once told me, the rule of thumb is admit nothing. If it were you, would you admit unless you were caught in a compromising position and couldn’t deny it???
Wa Gine On Hey – Rule of thumb wins hand down.
Shorty – They want to have their cake and eat it too, so they tell us sweet lies and most of us either believe or just accept what they say.
Wha Gine On Hey – Most women turn a blind eye because they believe they have the best man in the world and don’t want to lose him, but there are plenty of fish in the sea whether or not we want to believe it. Never allow a man to walk over you.
Petrified – Unless you are lucky to catch him in the act, a man will bring down heaven on earth that he is not cheating. The fact is many women don’t leave their men until they see them with the outside woman, so men will lie to keep the main woman.
Wha Gine On Hey – Outside Woman??? Some men tell lies whether it is inside or outside because they always have room on their plate for extras.
Queen B – It’s quite simple really. If he admits it, more than likely the woman will leave and he won’t be “cheating” anymore. He would no longer be able to have the best of both worlds. He can no longer have the wifey at home and the outside girl to give him what he wants as well, so therefore why admit? He is going to cover it up for as long as he can; he won’t risk admitting at all. A man knows that some women will believe every word they say, so they know that they can lie about everything. In all honesty, women can be like police – they can have all the evidence jumping out at them but they still want a confession. Finally, he won’t admit he is cheating because (maybe just maybe) there is nothing to admit and he is innocent.
Wha Gine On Hey – That’s correct, men like the best of both worlds but, as you said, even though the evidence is jumping out at us, we always want a confession. Believe it or not, it’s just a way of prolonging the relationship since most of us are too weak to move on.
Andrea – Some men figure they will hurt their spouses more if they admit. Others believe that if they admit, they are also admitting to themselves that they have done something wrong and the image of themselves that they project becomes a fallacy. It is also a power thing, so they see themselves as being the one in control of the relationship dictating the rules and so on. For them, women are weak and need direction and guidance. The leader can’t very well admit to a mistake – then the troops will lose respect and all hell will break loose.
Wha Gine On Hey – The sarcasm is killing me here!!

Praises to SBA – NationNews Barbados — nationnews.com

One night of awesome talent!
That’s the treat patrons got with the compliments of the Small Business Association, which began its week of activities with a concert at the Jackie Opel Amphitheatre last Sunday.
One of the outstanding performances was by Praise Academy Of Dance, who moved across the stage to the music in a well-choreographed piece.
Kenneth Armstrong did not disappoint as he sang You Raise Me Up and How Great Thou 武汉光伏发电Art.
No stranger to the stage, this young man thrilled the audience with his performance.
Kirk Layne, musical instructor of Notes Of Praise, did a piece entitled Great Is Thy Faithfulness on the keyboard. The church-like atmosphere created through this presentation filled the people with a sense of worship and they were moved to offer praise to God.
Acappella group G-Syndicate brought their experience to the stage as they got the crowd moving to a melody of old gospel favourites that included Walk Holy and Walking Up The King’s Highway.
What A Wonderful World was the first song by songbird Kellie Cadogan, who not only used the stage well, but also captivated everyone with her style and dynamic voice.
She followed up with Feeling Good.
Other artistes included TLC, Alexandra Trio, Adrian Green and the Israel Lovell Dancers.
